The Flower That Refuses to Fade

Solar Oil of Gold stepped out of the pages of Ariella Goldheart and into the apothecary, built around one of the most extraordinary skin botanicals I know: Helichrysum italicum.

Immortelle. Everlasting. The flower that refuses to fade.

Those names aren’t simply romantic. Helichrysum’s small golden flower heads retain their color and form remarkably well after drying. And beneath all that poetry is some fascinating chemistry.

Inside the Golden Flower

When we talk about a plant’s constituents, we’re simply talking about the naturally occurring chemical compounds within it—the chemistry the plant creates as part of being alive.

A medicinal plant can contain hundreds of them. Different families of plants give us different combinations of terpenes, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, esters, alkaloids and countless other substances. And different preparations reveal different portions of that chemistry. A hydrosol is not chemically identical to an essential oil. A tincture extracts differently again.

Same plant. Different expressions of the plant.

Helichrysum italicum contains a particularly interesting collection of aromatic compounds, including neryl acetate, α-pinene, γ-curcumene and the characteristic italidiones, along with flavonoids, phenolic compounds and other constituents found in different preparations of the plant.

But there is one worth lingering over for a moment.

Neryl acetate.

Neryl acetate is an ester, one of the naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in Helichrysum essential oil.

Researchers have studied both H. italicum essential oil and neryl acetate on human skin tissue and found effects involving genes associated with epidermal differentiation, skin-barrier formation and ceramide synthesis.

That sounds far more complicated than it is.

The epidermis is the outermost major layer of the skin. Epidermal differentiation is part of the natural process through which developing skin cells mature into the specialized cells that create our protective outer surface.

And ceramides are lipids—fats naturally present in the skin—that are essential to a healthy barrier. They help the skin retain moisture, remain supple and protect itself from the outside world.

So underneath Helichrysum’s reputation as a rejuvenating skin botanical is some fascinating biology. Modern research is looking at its relationship not merely with how skin looks, but with processes involved in how the skin organizes, protects and maintains itself.

Research into different preparations of Helichrysum has also explored its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, extracellular-matrix biology, collagen deposition and tissue repair.

The extracellular matrix is essentially the supportive architecture around our cells. In skin, it includes things such as collagen and hyaluronic acid that contribute to structure, hydration and resilience.

So now we have a fuller picture: skin barrier, ceramides, inflammation, oxidative stress, tissue structure and repair.

But this is where we have to be careful not to isolate one constituent and declare it the reason Helichrysum does what it does.

Plants don’t work as single notes. They work more like compositions.

Neryl acetate may be particularly interesting, but it exists alongside Helichrysum’s terpenes, esters, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and many other constituents. Some contribute antioxidant activity, some interact with inflammatory pathways, others participate in the aromatic and protective chemistry of the plant—and all of them exist within a much larger phytochemical matrix.

In botanical medicine, we often talk about synergy: the way different constituents can complement, modify and sometimes enhance one another’s activity. A whole botanical preparation can therefore behave differently from a single constituent isolated from everything that naturally surrounds it.

Neryl acetate isn’t Helichrysum. It is one note within Helichrysum.

And perhaps that is part of what makes the plant so interesting for skin. Instead of one constituent doing one thing, we have a botanical composition interacting with multiple aspects of skin biology—barrier function, moisture retention, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, tissue structure and repair.

This is one of the places where I think modern reductionism can make us lose sight of the plant itself. We identify a compound, isolate it, name it and understandably become fascinated by what it does. But the plant never created that molecule to exist alone.

It created a composition.

So rather than searching for the single molecule responsible for Helichrysum’s reputation, I find it far more interesting to look at the harmony of the plant.

Because Mother Nature rarely seems to formulate with one ingredient.

From Flower to Oil

And this is where Helichrysum stops being interesting to me merely as a botanical and becomes something I want on the skin.

There is a quality to Immortelle that is difficult to describe until you have worked with it. It doesn’t feel delicate. It feels concentrated. The aroma alone tells you something about the plant—warm, dry, herbaceous, honeyed, almost sun-baked. There is nothing watery or fleeting about it.

It feels like gold with roots.

That is what I wanted at the center of Solar Oil of Gold.

The oil stepped out of the pages of Ariella Goldheart, but the formula had to work here, in an actual human body. Helichrysum became the solar heart of it: carried in oils chosen to move beautifully into the skin, with petitgrain bringing its bright green aromatic intelligence and Ormus woven through the formula in the way I work with it throughout my apothecary.

What I love about the finished oil is that it doesn’t feel like something designed to make skin look temporarily prettier from the outside.

It feels like tending.

And perhaps that is because I don’t see tending the skin as fundamentally different from tending a garden.

You don’t stand over a mature garden screaming at it to become young again. 😂 You feed the soil. You water what needs water. You prune. You protect. You replenish. You pay attention. You give the living system what it needs to continue doing what living systems know how to do.

That is how I think about mature skin.

Not: How do we erase what happened here?

But:

How do we tend what is still magnificently alive?

And Helichrysum makes extraordinary sense within that philosophy because everything about the plant speaks the same language:

resilience, concentration, endurance, renewal.

Long Before the Laboratory

Humans knew there was something remarkable about this little golden plant long before anyone knew what a ceramide was.

The written trail of Helichrysum reaches back more than two thousand years.

The Greek botanist Theophrastus, writing several centuries before Christ, recorded plants identified with Helichrysum and their medicinal uses. Later, in the first century, Dioscorides included Helichrysum in De Materia Medica, the enormous medicinal-plant work that would influence European and Mediterranean medicine for well over a thousand years.

Ancient descriptions associated Helichrysum with preparations for burns and wounds, while Dioscorides recorded medicinal preparations for other complaints as well. Through later Mediterranean folk traditions, Helichrysum italicum continued to be used in connection with the skin, inflammation, respiratory complaints and digestive troubles.

But Helichrysum wasn’t only medicine.

It was ceremonial.

Its golden flowers were woven into wreaths and garlands, prized in part because they retained their brilliant color long after being cut.

Imagine them.

Tiny golden flowers gathered beneath the Mediterranean sun and woven together into crowns—and while ordinary flowers withered, these remained.

The gold held. The form held. The flower endured.

Everlasting. Immortelle.

The flower earned its name.

Meet the Plant

And Helichrysum itself is rather deceptive.

It isn’t a voluptuous flower demanding your attention like a rose or peony. Helichrysum italicum is a small aromatic perennial shrub with slender silvery-gray to gray-green foliage and clusters of tiny, intensely yellow flower heads.

From a distance, it can look almost modest.

Get close and it becomes another story.

Touch the foliage and you meet the aroma.

Warm. Herbaceous. Dry. Honeyed. Spicy. Slightly woody.

There can be something hay-like about it, something tea-like, something faintly smoky and that unmistakable warm savory note that gave H. italicum another common name: curry plant.

It isn’t the curry leaf used in Indian cooking. The nickname comes from the aromatic resemblance.

But even curry doesn’t really describe it.

It’s not rose. It’s not jasmine. It’s not lavender.

Helichrysum smells ancient.

There is something sun-baked and concentrated about it, as though heat itself has somehow worked its way into the plant.

And this is where all those chemical names become something other than words on a page.

Those aromatic compounds?

You can smell them.

Plant chemistry becomes perceptible the moment you brush the foliage between your fingers.

The Golden Everlasting

Helichrysum belongs to the daisy family, Asteraceae, but those little golden buttons we casually call flowers are actually organized flower heads made up of many tiny florets surrounded by papery bracts.

Those papery golden bracts help give Helichrysum its extraordinary ability to retain its appearance after drying.

Dry a rose and you watch it transform.

Dry Helichrysum and it seems almost unwilling to admit anything has happened.

The gold remains. The architecture remains. The flower holds itself.

Before chromatography identified its constituents, before anybody distilled its essential oil, before a laboratory examined its effect on human skin tissue, the plant was already demonstrating its character right in front of us.

It endured.

Where Helichrysum Grows

Helichrysum belongs naturally to the Mediterranean landscape and is beautifully suited to sun, heat, dry conditions and lean, rocky or sandy soils.

It knows exposure.

It doesn’t require lushness to become potent. It has adapted to brightness, dryness, wind and mineral ground, and its aromatic chemistry is part of how it lives within that environment.

The land matters. Soil matters. Sun and water matter. But ultimately, what interests me most is what the plant does with those things.

It turns them into Helichrysum.

Silver foliage. Golden flowers. Extraordinary aroma.

Medicine.

The Frequency of Immortelle

And then there is the part of Helichrysum that doesn’t arrive neatly packaged in a medical journal.

Its frequency.

Plants have a presence.

Rose has one. Mugwort has another. Tobacco has another.

And Helichrysum, to me, is profoundly solar.

Not bright, frivolous, happy-little-yellow-flower solar.

Ancient solar.

Gold. Warmth. Concentration. Vitality. Resilience.

It feels like something that has been exposed to the elements and has somehow become more concentrated because of them.

And I don’t experience Helichrysum as the frequency of youth.

I experience something considerably more interesting:

the frequency of enduring vitality.

Youth hasn’t weathered anything yet.

Helichrysum has.

The plant lives beneath intense sun. It grows in lean ground. It remains aromatic. It flowers gold. And even after harvest, those tiny flowers hold their color and form.

There is something almost alchemical in that signature.

Exposure transformed into concentration rather than depletion.

And perhaps that’s why I find Helichrysum so compelling for mature skin.

I’m not particularly interested in telling women that the objective of beauty is to erase the evidence that we’ve lived.

I’m interested in vitality.

Skin that remains supple. Luminous. Resilient. Nourished. Alive.

Skin that has weathered sun and seasons, hormones and heartbreak, laughter and sleepless nights, magnificent years and ordinary Tuesdays—and still possesses its remarkable ability to continually renew itself.

That is where the energetic language of Helichrysum and the biological language we started with begin to meet.

One speaks of ceramides, epidermal differentiation, barrier integrity and tissue remodeling.

The other simply says:

Everlasting.

Neither tells us everything about the plant.

Together, they give us a much richer portrait.

Immortelle

And that’s really Helichrysum.

A little silver-green Mediterranean shrub carrying clusters of gold.

An aroma unlike almost anything else in the apothecary.

A medicinal history stretching back thousands of years.

A flower woven into ancient crowns because it refused to quickly fade.

A traditional medicine.

An aromatic medicine.

A modern subject of research.

And a plant whose chemistry is now giving us another language for understanding some of what human beings had been observing for a very long time.

That is the Helichrysum at the heart of Solar Oil of Gold.

Not simply another ingredient in a face oil.

Immortelle.

And once you know the plant, you understand why I wanted it there.
